Itinerary:
DAY ONE: Embark on a journey to southern and coastal Georgia filled with culture, architecture, history and the beauty of Spring. Enjoy the scenery and getting acquainted with our fellow travelers. Our dinner and overnight will be near Cullman, AL.
DAY TWO: Our morning drive leads us into Eufaula, Alabama, located on the scenic Chattahoochee River at the Georgia line. Graced with Southern Hospitality and under the canopy of live oaks, this small town’s quaint historic district is a must stop for lunch, and a visit to Superior Pecans. Browse their large selection of crafted pecans, hand churned ice cream and gifts. We’ll continue our drive through scenic southern Georgia, spotting azaleas, dogwoods and magnolias amongst the tall Georgia pines. Overnight and dinner will be in Waycross, GA just north of the great Okefenokee Swamp.
DAY THREE: This morning’s short drive leads into the famous Okefenokee Swamp Park - our gateway to experience the unique ecosystem, wildlife, social heritage and natural beauty of the land. We’ll enjoy a naturalist lead boat cruise down original Seminole Indian waterways through Green River and into Mud Lake, learning more about the flora and fauna. This afternoon, another short drive leads us to coastal Georgia and the Golden Isles. Located just south of Savannah, these four beautiful barrier islands - St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Little St. Simons - make up this region. We’ll board our guided tram tour of the Jekyll Island Historic District and visit the historic Moss Cottage, Mosaic Gallery and Faith Chapel. There will be time for a stroll along the Atlantic shore before heading to our overnight in Brunswick, GA.
DAY FOUR: Welcome to Savannah - one of the oldest cities in the United States and the first planned city in America. It was a strategic port during the American Revolution and the American Civil War. Known as the Hostess City of the South, it is truly enchanting and romantic. We’ll start at the Visitors Center with a guided trolley tour of the city - the best way to experience the moss-draped oaks, stately mansions, and beautiful squares while hearing about Savannah’s fascinating history and folk-lore. Enjoy free-time afterwards for lunch and browsing along the historic Savannah Riverfront. This afternoon, we board the Savannah Belle cruise along the Savannah River. Along the way we’ll pass the world famous Waving Girl, Florence Martus, then cruise through the ship yards and past the tip of Hutchinson Island and Old Fort Jackson. Back on shore, we’ll partake in a delicious dinner at the World Famous Pirates House. - first opened in 1753 as an inn for seafarers, the house became a meeting point for pirates and sailors from the Seven Seas. We then will check into our accommodations for two nights.
DAY FIVE: Our drive north leads us over the state border and into South Carolina’s Low Country, known for its coast, sea islands, swamps, marshes, and countryside. We’ll spend time touring at Charleston Tea Garden, the only tea garden in North America, taking an educational and scenic trolley tour of the grounds. There are hundreds of thousands of tea bushes stretching out acre after acre for almost as far as the eye can see. Later, lunch and leisurely browsing time in Charleston’s Historic District and City Market. In the afternoon, we’ll have a local guide join us onboard for a tour of Carolina’s oldest city, known as the “Holy City” because of its early religious freedom and many church spires. Our day will culminate with dinner included.
DAY SIX: Departing the coast, our travel day will take us across central Georgia. After lunch, we’ll pause for a stop in Juliette, GA - home of the iconic film ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’. Juliette was the perfect location for the fictional town of Whistle Stop and not much has changed today. We will have time to stroll the main street and see the sights of the film, including a stop at the “Whistle Stop Café”. Dinner and our overnight will be just north of Atlanta in Cartersville, GA.
DAY SEVEN: Our final travel day of this Spring journey will have us returning to St. Louis by early evening.
